Migraines

I used to get migraines that left me crawling through the house because it hurt to lift my head.

I increased my salt intake.

They vanished.

The amount of salt put in food nowadays is medically fashionable, but it's not enough to maintain electrolyte balance. Capillaries start acting funny.

I have no idea if this will help, but I hope it does.

(In dire emergency I would take half a teaspoon of salt and about a cup of ice water. Usually started working in a couple of minutes.)

Jeph had a migraine, so he was delayed getting Monday's comic up.

What you said. Prolly I shoulda mentioned that. I forget that not everybody reads creators' comments.

(I suppose I could just go around indiscriminately telling random strangers everything I've learned about coping with being crippled/injured/sick. Take up an awful lot of time, though.)

Man, would it ever.

Thanks for the tip, though. I've only ever had one migraine in my entire life, but should I ever get another I'll have a potential migraine killer. And I must confess that something as simple as salt never would have occurred to me.

When doctors started recommending Tylenol to people who clearly had severe inflammation, I realized I was on my own. An awful lot of pain involves inflammation. Salt does a great job of getting fluid out of tissues and back into the bloodstream, where it can be dealt with by the kidneys.

(Caffeine helps them do this. I advise tea rather than coffee, which has oils that can cause nausea and inflammation. Nausea gets REALLY bad if you're trying to take salt.)

(I am entertaining the suspicion that doctors just want the rest of us immobile.)

I wouldn't doubt that...

I was also thinking about how Marigold and Dale were eating salt-flavored beef jerky (and the title of that strip).

Hmm.

Curious coincidence or subconscious plea for help?

We may never be certain.

This seems incredibly strange to me, as I would have guessed that the imbalance leaned toward too much sodium and not enough everything else, especially potassium. Most preservatives are sodium ________-ate so I really don't see how people can have too little. I was planning on making some homemade electrolyte juice for when I work out, but that's specifically when I'm drinking a couple of liters of water in an hour.

Well, it works, and not just for me, so I must have got something right.

O^O

In conjunction with amateur medical advice, that's very disturbing.

Have you ever considered writing for sale?
